How to birth a lamb
We are keenly looking through our archive as lambing approaches. We found this video which perfectly shows how one should help a ewe birth her lamb. Take note of the subtle swing. The farmer was trained in obstetrics at St. Thomas’ 1978. He hasn’t forgot a thing.
Note from when the video was filmed. “Miraculous event at the farm today. Lamb’s head was hanging out her mum for quite some time. We came back hoping the lamb would be born naturally. It’s head was still hanging out and we were sure it was dead. Caught the mum and dad used his soft and gentle hands to yank the lamb out. We saw it take a breath so dad swing it around to encourage blood flow. He lost his grip on the slippery body, but despite being clobbered into the ground, the little lamb was breathing. Mum licked her clean and she is doing well.”
