The soil profile

The majority of the soils are based over clay and the farm is a drained swamp. The major problems are the cracking in summer and water logging in wet winters.

Our practice is based on an organic approach to pasture improvement. This involves spring and autumn aeration. Mulching long pastures and using Petrik fertilisers with added fish oil. Simlpe and relatively cheap. We are also adding lime and this year vintage composted pure pig manure.

All the lime and manure has been spread, each at 0.5 tonne/ hectare. we have had 8mm of rain since. Now awaiting the seed to come from Grahams seeds. This is a mixture of perennial rye grass, red, white clover, fescue, chickory and plantain. Hopefully this will be in by the end of next week. the weather has turned cold and windy but warmth coming so the ground should be ideal for germination.
